The IRS has finally released the online Form 990-N "e-Postcard" that
virtually all clubs and councils will be required to file every year
from now on. I haven't been through the process yet, but it should just
ask for a contact person, and a question to verify that your annual
receipts are still less than $25,000.
The web site address is: http://epostcard.form990.org.
This is run by a company called Urban Institute. They appear to be a
legitimate IRS-authorized contractor, handling these forms for the
government. If you are naturally suspicious, like me, I suggest that
you go straight to the IRS at www.irs.gov, then pick "Charities &
Non-Profits", and you'll see the article at the top of the page. The
article contains the link to Urban Institute.
Note that there is at least one company that has registered a similar
but fake domain (epostcard.form.org), in an attempt to catch people who
type badly.
Each club will have to create a login. Since many clubs change
treasurers every year, I suggest that the login be generic to the club
rather than specific to the treasurer. Make it something that you can
pass along to the next treasurer.
Delegates, please forward this to the clubs in your council. As I said,
virtually every club and council in the state will have to file this
form, to avoid losing their tax-exempt status.
