Dear Band Music Lover,
Would you enjoy an evening in Spain? Well, we cant really take you to
Spain, but we can promise an evening of Spanish music that surely will make
you think you must be in Spain. Our upcoming concert on February 25 in the
Lakeridge High School auditorium, beginning at 7:30 pm, is one of the events
sponsored by Lake Oswego Reads. This group from our library has picked the
book The Shadow of the Wind by Spanish author Carlos Ruiz Zafon in hopes
that many people in the Lake Oswego area will read the book and will attend
many community events revolving around this book during the month of
February. We have chosen music that will highlight many of the customs and
rituals of the Spanish culture, from lively and regal dances, tender and
quiet sounds of the people, exciting marches, and the bravura of the
bullfight!
If you come early, you may browse Spanish art work by students from
Lakeridge and Lake Oswego High Schools and drawings by local artist Larry
Zeigler. The Millennium Winds will offer pre-concert music in the lobby as
you view the art display. Doors will open at 6:30 pm.
To open our program, we will present an exciting arrangement of Malagueña,
one of the more popular Spanish pieces in the United States. Other
selections will include Andalusia, La Oreja de Oro, Danse Espagnole, and Rio
Con Brio. Dr. Steve Blakley, our featured trumpet soloist, will enthrall you
with his rendition of La Virgen de la Macarena, the Bullfighters Song. You
will hear a description of Pablo Picassos painting styles in Pablo, and El
Camino Real is a thrilling piece that is sure to excite any Spanish blood
that may be in your veins. Songs from the Man of La Mancha and three
wonderful Spanish marches, Gerona, España Cañi, and Pepita Greus will make
the evening complete.
Admission is free, so please bring your friends and family as our band
presents a thrilling variety of the wonderful music of Spain.
