Dear OSB Patron,
We're back from our triumphant concert at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago,
which was an absolute success in every way. We performed a near-perfect
concert and received a standing ovation, and all the composers and our guest
conductors were full or praise for us. Playing at that prestigious
convention was one of the greatest thrills you can imagine!
We don't want any grass to grow under our feet, so we're already planning
our winter concert series in the Portland/Vancouver area. We've prepared a
program of music with an international flavor, and we're calling the concert
"Music From Around the World."
Our Winter concert dates are:
Sunday, February 11 - 3 PM Vancouver

High School
Here is our complete fall concert lineup:
Howard Cable Newfoundland Rhapsody
Robert Sheldon A Longford Legend (Irish)
Pierre Leemans March of the Belgian Parachutists (French/Belgian)
James Barnes Beautiful Oregon
Intermission
H. Owen Reed Carnival from "La Fiesta Mexicana"
Martin Ellerby Tales from Andersen (Danish)
Clifton Jameson Jones An American Songbook
We will begin with Newfoundland Rhapsody by Howard Cable, one of the great
icons of Canadian music. He wrote this rhapsody on Canadian folk songs in
the 1950's, and at age 86 he still composes every day. Next is Robert
Sheldon's A Longford Legend, three songs from Ireland that are sure to make
you smile. Guest conductor Bill Martin will conduct the famous March of the
Belgian Parachutists, and we will close the first half of the concert with
the work we commissioned for our twentieth anniversary, Beautiful Oregon by
James Barnes. This work received the loudest and longest applause of all
the works we played in Chicago, and we're sure you will love it as much as
we do.
After the intermission we will continue the program with the Carnival
movement from H. Owen Reed's La Fiesta Mexicana, complete with the sounds of
the bullfighting ring and a cantina band. Those who remember the stories of
Denmark's Hans Christian Andersen will love Martin Ellerby's Tales from
Anderson, as we bring to life musically the stories of The Steadfast Tin
Soldier, The Little Match Girl, and The Emperor's New Clothes. We will
close our concert with Clifton Jameson Jones' An American Songbook, a
compilation of patriotic songs that will make you want to wave your own
American flag.
We only have two performances this series, and we hope you can attend one of
them. The first is at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 11, at the Vancouver
School of the Arts and Academics. This venue has excellent acoustics, and
we always enjoy performing there. The second performance is in Tualatin
High School's Performing Arts Center at 7:30 on Thursday, February 15. For
directions to both concert sites, please click the links above or go to our
website at www.osband.org.
We're looking forward to a terrific 2007, and we wish you and yours a happy,
healthy, and musical New Year!
Sincerely,
Michael Burch-Pesses
Director,
