Ah, the sounds of summer, wafting through the night air. What a nice
concert we provided for our community. Once again, some great moments, some
not so great moments. No major breakdowns with the exception of your
director getting lost and directing in a circle at one point until I could
figure out where the heck you all were. Thanks for making me look good and
not stopping.

The progress that we as musicians have made this past year is substantial.
Think RUSH and realize that less than two years ago, we could not/would not
have tackled that difficult a piece. There are very few pieces of music in
our library that I would hesitate to attempt, let alone program.

If there is one area that we need to work on it's the support system for our
group. Your director and your board of directors need more involvement from
you the members of the band. At every board meeting over the last couple of
years there has been a discussion of "how do we create a group of band
boosters?" If you are just showing up on Tuesday nights and playing the
concerts, if you never invite your family and friends, if you don't tell
your neighbors, your church, your health club, your hair stylists....the
people you share your life with about us, you are not doing enough. With
our funding cut by 75% this year, I have come to realize just how fragile
our existence is. Its the old song, "You don't know what cha got....till
it's gone." Last night, we didn't' have anyone collecting donations. We
didn't have a bucket out, no one passed the hat. Everyone passed the buck,
but not the hat. Who's responsible....we all are. Band boosters can be
family members too. Past members of the band who don't have the desire or
time to perform but are willing to pass out flyers, put up posters and the
all the other details that make a successful concert.

Look at your schedules, talk with your families and consider becoming a
member of the band aids.

Enjoy the time off. Tuesday night the 234th Army band will be playing in
Wilsonville if you just can't get enough. :)

Proudly your director:

Steve
